Both Excel and Power BI Desktop have increasingly powerful data mashup capabilities, but is this where you have drawn in data integration on your BI Blueprint? (I sincerely hope not!)

Just because you CAN [do something below] does not mean you SHOULD. I would not try and squeeze every company into the same BI Blueprint anymore than I'll declare here a global opinion on in-memory vs direct query. What are YOUR business requirements? What reporting and analytics features does YOUR business require? I will say this: I personally feel all reporting and analytics is helped out substantially by a SSAS semantic layer, but let us put that aside for now.

Below is a matrix of how I see the MS BI tool stack ... today ... for this immediate moment. Tomorrow there will be new Power BI features and more SSRS integration options, but for now, this is how I see it from a 10K point view.

MS BI Data Delivery / Visualization Comparison

https://www.delorabradish.com/ssrs---reporting/ms-bi-data-delivery-visualization-comparison

https://www.delorabradish.com/ssrs---reporting/ms-bi-data-delivery-visualization-comparison#comments

Automation

Excel

Power View

PPS

Report Builder

Self-Service

SharePoint

SSRS

The following table is just one consultant's opinion, but I am asked frequently about the many pieces of the MS BI tool stack used for reporting purposes. In response, I made up this slide in Power Point, that I'll offer up here for your amazement or amusement. It is not "gospel truth", just my opinion and I am happy to hear yours. You have to start with something when making a recommendation. What is "best" for you is totally dependent upon what you are trying to accomplish, an [...]

What is "best" for you is totally dependent upon what you are trying to accomplish, and the resources you have to get there.

For report automation, I think of things in this fashion:

Self-Service BI capabilities are one of the fastest evolving tools in the MS BI tool stack. Without diving into what I call "Power to the [n]th Degree", this is how I categorize self-service BI offerings.
